She told him that she was pregnant and that the baby was Officer Tidbits. The Sergeant informed her that she would have to take a leave of absence because she was pregnant. She stated she talked to a lavaВ»year and was informed that since it happened on duty and the Sergeant knew what kind of man the FOOT was, it was his fault that she was pregnant and that she could get workman’s compensation (More & Miller, 2014). There are many issues with the department and with Officer Jane Roberts, Field Training Officer Andrew Tidbits and Sergeant Williams.

I do not believe hat Sergeant Williams made a sound operational decision at all. He knew what kind of man the FOOT was and did nothing about it before or now. The man is married and has kids, and everyone knows that he is a ladies man and they let him get away with it (More & Miller, 2014). That is sexual harassment just waiting to happen. The Sergeant is just as liable as the FOOT when it comes to sexual harassment. Sexual harassment can be any unwelcome sexual advances, verbal comments, or any sexual nature of any kind (“Sexual Harassment”, n. D. ).

Just because it was not unwelcome with Officer Roberts goes not mean there were not women or men in the past that found his ladies’ man attitude offensive. Sergeant Williams thought that Officer Roberts could hold her own against men like the FOOT and put them in their place if need be, so he never thought there would be an issue if he put the two of them together. Think that deep down he thought that Roberts would tell him off and put him in his place, like so many others should have. Like he wants to and does not have the guts to do. Williams should never have let the FOOT train anyone with the attitude that he has.

Sergeant Williams should have now it would cause problems sooner or later. There should have been a policy in place about workplace dating and each office should have had to sign it. With these kinds of policies, things need to be clearly written, like defining what is “dating’, because everyone has their own idea Of what that is (Williams, 2015). This may not have stopped their relationship, but it may have controlled some of the outcomes, like the workers compensation or possible lawsuit (More & Miller). There were many mistakes made in the beginning, even before Public Safety Officer Roberts went to training.

The Cottontails Police Department/fire department was told to take it easy on the officers so that they did not take jobs elsewhere. Officers were allowed to take longer lunches, go to school functions during work hours and take college classes during their shift. If work was done, they could do what they wanted more or less. This is not how to manage a department, even if you want to keep people from quitting. I believe that there is low managerial visibility going on in this town along with low public visibility (More , 2014, p. 327).

The lack of supervision and the way the departments get away tit things, in other words the leniency that the city gives them is what has caused the visibility issues. Believe that the policies that are in place in these departments are not written very well or just not followed at all. As I do not believe that there is true corruption going on in this department, but if the officers are allowed to go to school functions, go to college and take longer breaks just because, they are stealing money from the city and that is corruption, so then you many have to look at the Managerial Secrecy (More & Miller, 2014, p. 327).

If that is case then that could be why Sergeant Williams does not do anything about the FOOT breaking the rules about fraternities and causing issues with other officers. I believe that policies and procedures need to be put in place and followed so that future situations like this can be prevented. Management should not let officers do curricular activities during work hours and maybe even split up the police and the fire departments into two departments. It may cost the city more to begin with, but think it will save them money in the long run. Maybe the departments could share management personnel instead of officers.

There should not be any sexual content allowed and dating co-workers should be null or a contract needs to be signed between the two parties so that there are no legal issues later on down the road. The parties that are at fault here, depends on what issue we are talking about. Believe that Sergeant Williams is to blame for the FOOT even being able to train. He knew what he was like and did nothing to stop him. This could have and should have been taken care of long ago. The FOOT and the Sergeant should have more respect for the department and homeless to let that kind of activity go on.

The Sergeant puts himself at risk for a civil suit because he failed to sustain disciplinary action against the FOOT. It may involve defamation of character or because he failed to supervise the OPT when he knew that he acted in a misconduct way that could cause injury to another (More & Miller, 2014, p. 321). The FOOT is married and should have more respect for his marriage, wife and kids, then to have an affair and get someone else pregnant and then not take care of that baby or woman. What does that say about his character? Sergeant Williams should not have put the woo officers together even if he thought that Roberts could handle her-self.

Officer Roberts should not have gotten involved with the FOOT, he is married and has kids, where is her self-respect? She should not have slept with the OPT and the FOOT should not have slept with her. They are all to blame for this situation. Sergeant Williams has a lot fork ahead of him and he needs to start with checking on the policies that are in place or not in place. He stated to Roberts that she had to take leave because she was pregnant. But is that a policy? Because according to the EEOC Enforcement Guidance on Pregnancy

Discrimination, she does not have to take leave because she IS pregnant, that is discrimination (Yang 2014). Roberts mentioned that she had contacted an attorney about getting worker’s compensation because she got pregnant on duty, well I suggest that Sergeant Williams get a hold of upper management and let them know what is going on and get the departments attorney involved because she could bring a law suit because Sergeant Williams did not protect her like he should have and she may have a case against him (More & Miller, 2014). Fifth policies and procedures are not up to date, they deed to be updated.

The FOOT needs to be talked to about his actions and he needs to be disciplined for his actions. He needs to know that he may be made to pay child support when the child is born, because Roberts will not let it be, so he needs to come clean with his wife and the department. The department has put up with his attitude for a long time and they should get an apology from him. Sergeant Williams needs to separate the two officers so that there is no animosity in the departments and he needs to have some training for himself and the other officers on sexual harassment, misconduct ND corruption.
