Town History

The Township of Eagles Nest was created under Minnesota Statute 379.02 on June 5, 1990 by resolution of the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners.  The township was formed by the division of Breitung Township.  Of the original 70 square miles of Breitung Township, 30 square miles on the Eastern side of the township became Eagles Nest Township. Eagles Nest Township held the first Town Meeting on June 19, 1990 in the original fire house.  To quote Juanice Youngberg:

"The first township meeting  (the organizational meeting ordered by the county) was held in the lower fire hall, with rain dripping through the ceiling.  People sat with umbrellas to keep the drips from getting them wet.  Our organizational meeting turned out somewhere around 100 people as I recall, and Ellen Trancheff, (now the township assessor) Clerk of Greenwood Township was there to swear in the new officers and keep us on the side of law."

During this meeting the first town officials were chosen.  Selected were Rodney Lindberg, Chairman, Pete Davis and Bill Rauch Supervisors, Juanice Youngberg, Clerk, and Sue Chiabotti, Treasurer. Land was purchased in 1991 adjacent to the old fire house.  The present "modern" town hall/ fire house was constructed in 1992 - 1993.  The new town hall was dedicated on June 19th, 1993 by town officers Pete Davis, Dorothy Harley and Bill Rauch, Supervisors, Juanice Youngberg, Clerk and Sue Chiabotti, Treasurer.

The new town hall houses the clerk's office and contains a completely equipped kitchen.  The hall will accommodate up to 150 people.  The firehouse (physically part of the same building), houses the Eagles Nest Township Fire Department equipment which includes two "brush rigs", two pumpers and one tanker.
